OpenAI states that the Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on 26 April 2026 and that the Sora API is discontinued on 24 September 2026. Data associated with Sora is deleted after any final export window passes. No replacement model is named. As of 2026-09-12.

1Why the two dates are five months apart

The consumer product went first and the API is going second, which is the usual order and the one that matters least to individuals and most to anyone who built on it. A studio that used the app lost its tool in April. A studio whose pipeline calls the API has had five months of notice and a hard stop in September.

The gap is also why this entry exists on a site about apps rather than only about models. Between April and September, the model stayed reachable through resellers even though the vendor's own product was gone, and some of those resellers still name it today.

2The part that is easy to miss

The announcement does not only end a service, it ends storage. Data associated with use of Sora is deleted after any final export window passes, and the export route named in the announcement is a page on the sunset site. Anyone who kept masters only inside the product has a deadline that is separate from the API date and less advertised.

No replacement model is named. That absence is recorded as an absence: it does not mean nothing will replace it, only that the announcement does not say, and a migration plan built on an unnamed successor is a plan built on nothing.
